Good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein / HDL) has been long time identical with heart health. Recent studies said that high levels of HDL cholesterol in the blood also can lowers cancer risk. HDL cholesterol is like “scavengers” or cleaners. HDL cholesterol helps reduce the amount of bad cholesterol (LDL) in blood. “Rising levels of HDL cholesterol by about 10 points could reduce cancer risk seem to be within 4.5 years,” said Dr.Richard Karas, chairman of the researchers.
In his research, Karas and his colleagues analyzed 24 randomized trials to determine the effect of decreasing the bad cholesterol from the statin class drugs on heart health. It turns out that the research also found additional benefits from the decreasing of bad cholesterol, which decreased the risk of cancer.
“Rising levels of HDL are associated with reduced risk of cancer, but we can not say that there is a causal relationship,” said Karas. He said the HDL will alter immune system function which in charge of attacking abnormal cells that might the precancerous cells. “HDL also contains antioxidants and is certainly beneficial for reducing cancer risk,” he said.
Good cholesterol also known to possess anti-inflammatory activity. Inflammation is a major cause of various diseases, such as diabetes and cancer.
To prove it, that’s why that experiment is required to determine whether drugs that raise levels of HDL will reduce the incidence of cancer. But, the drug is not available on the market at this time, although some are already in the testing phase by pharmaceutical companies.
